Couples Mantra

My sister-in-law posted about her "Couples Mantra" asking if others had something calming they focus on in moments of stress. I thought I better take the opportunity to record for posterity the mantra we use.

"I feel good.....I feel great.....I feel wonderful"
(repeated as many times as needed)
This quote from Bob (What About) brings a smile to my face in even the most dire of circumstances. It works especially well if Darin says it to me.

I hadn't thought of making it into a wall hanging.
Officially added to my "things I just might do someday...seriously, I might" list.

Thanks for the reminder Cristin!

Come on Spring

It snowed this weekend.
Which isn't unusual, it snowed last year on April 30th. I remember watching it from my hospital window while holding a newborn Soren.

Still...I'm tired of being cold, and I have a Madsen bike I am ready to ride!!
I put this up on my door to send out warm weather vibes to the universe.

My sister-in-law Shauna made the cute flags.
She made me one for every month of the year!
They all have fun sayings and cute ribbon.

Love them Shauna Thank you!!
This months word is spot-on.

Creative stuff...

I have bi-monthly freak outs worrying that my children won't get enough opportunities in their little lives. I worry that because we can't afford everything, or it's not available, or I don't have the energy that they will somehow miss out on something wonderful and special.

There is only so much time, energy, and resources to go around. I feel like I have to choose SO VERY CAREFULLY, and the pressure is intense, what if I make the wrong choice

and then....something will remind me that if these darlings want something in their lives, it is their choice, and their responsibility to get it. My job is to expose them to the possibilities, show them where the resources are, and teach them how to ask for help.

Case in point.
I have thought it would be fun to put Miriam in an art class. In keeping within our resources/time/my energy, it has always been pushed aside for swim lessons, dancing, gymnastics...all things Miriam has requested (except for swimming, that was a safety thing).
So no art lessons so far. Luckily, we have been going to the library almost weekly since she was born. She has been choosing her own books, music and DVD's (with some guidance from me) for the last 3 years.

She checked out these art videos on her own. Watched them each at least 5 times....

and then went to work.

Even though she only had computer paper and crayola watercolors she created some beautiful artwork while mixing colors in the watercolor lid and, explaining to us which colors were hot and which ones were cold.

So, will I put her in art lessons?
Probably not, because she hasn't asked me for them. She seems perfectly content to learn on her own and do her own thing. The library has lots of resources. For instance, have you seen Mister Maker? I love when the British children say "Maaak It Meesta Maaka!" in unison.

She has been BEGGING for ice skating lessons. She even used her own money to go ice skating last weekend. When a girl shows that initiative, and expresses such desire, thats when I feel it's my job to step in, shift activities and create the opportunity.

To be honest, I will probably continue to have my freak outs. I am too invested in my children not to. I just wanted to write this experience down, hopefully to become more chill about things.
Zen motherhood...thats what I am striving for.

And now a word about Bub.

His creativity is completely different from Miriam. Bub has a very unique creative process, the way his brain works is a marvel to me!

He can play with playdough for hours, just molding and smashing never making anything in particular. He doesn't enjoy coloring in coloring books or pictures, and does very little drawing. He cares nothing for "staying in the lines" even though I know he can because I have seen him do it. When he does draw, he will take a marker, crayon...whatever and just start playing with it, marking the paper however he choses with no outcome seeming to be in mind. He will go until a picture emerges and then he will proclaim "it's a dragon!", "its an alien with funky hair", "it's the red planet". Once the proclamation has been made he is done, no need to embellish.
He can easily find pictures in clouds, snow, water, whatever is around.
He notices the details in life.

Soren at the moment:
Soren is beautiful, and demanding, and funny.
He LOVES balls and oatmeal and pebble ice.
If you tell him "NO" he will cry like his heart is broken.
He is free standing for a few seconds...longer if distracted.

Mimi, Bub, and Renny-Baby...my pride, my hope, and my joy.

Buying Diapers at Costco

Because I buy 138 diapers at a time, and my newborn came out of the womb an infant, I had lots of small diapers left over.

Which is good because I would never had made these cakes without the newbie diapers lying around. I don't usually spend the cost of diapers on baby gifts....I can't because my friends and relatives keep having so many babies!
AND I LOVE IT {even if I can't afford it}

St. Paddy's Day

The benefit of not getting paid to blog is that I don't have to have my holiday posts done on or before the actual holiday. I also don't have to be cool.
{the downside is not receiving any money}

So, the leprechaun did come again. He left gold coins, thrashed the house, green toilet water...yadda yadda. Miriam & Bub woke up early, dropped Soren off in our bed, and went down to hunt coins and eat Lucky Charms by themselves. They made a movie about it which is hilarious and nausea inducing all at the same time. It is sadly, too long to upload to this blog.

We did the green!

I bought colored hair spray on clearance after Halloween which took our greenness to another level.
Bub: "Mom, lou bettew put Zowen in gween cuzzzzz even zough he is a baby, I will has to pinch him.....it's lepewkaun wules."
As you can see, Soren was saved by a hand-me-down.

Thanks to Grandma C, we had lots of fun Leprechaun books to read after we ate our green/Irish/rainbow dinner.

Little Snow White

Miriam's theatre ballet company performed Snow White this year.
She was a snowflake,

and a flower.

Performances 4 Saturday's in a row, in a new beautiful theatre.
Big commitment for Darin and I, but Miriam loved every minute of it.

Special Guests:

Plus...Uncle Jared and Aunt Julia {I call them J&J} drove up and stayed in a hotel to see the performance! Man I wish I would have snagged a picture of Wy-guy and Tater-tot because they are sooooo cute.

The ballet company has already started working on Cinderella.
Rumor has it Mimi will be a blue bird.
If you come see it, we will buy you a candy bar during intermission {or at least sneak candy in for you}.

This is what we saw when we walked out of the Carl Bloch exhibit @ BYU last Saturday.

{Love M dancin' in the rain, and Bub's total cutness}

So we got to enjoy two kinds of masterpieces.

iPad tours are the way to go. I loved looking at the artwork and having all that information at my fingertips! Miriam sat and listened to what the experts had to say about every painting. Bub and Soren hung in there with us as well. I was pretty impressed with the kiddos, any given outing can go either way.

Mardi Gras!

We celebrated with snow goblins
(a surprise Bub left for a neighbor)

and some kiddie sledding.

BIggest birthday party I've ever been to.

Miriam's Elementary School turned 50!
Every grade prepared a song and dance representing the past decades.
The first graders had the 60's and preformed Yellow Submarine by the Beatles.
I told her Grandpa Rass would be so proud!

Torticollis

Ever heard of it?
I hadn't until Bub had it.
He woke up saying his neck hurt, I told him that happens sometimes when we sleep funny. A few hours later he wouldn't move his head at all, and kept his ear to his shoulder at all times. He cried all day, and wouldn't go to a play date with his friend Fielding (I KNEW it was bad when that happened). He woke up the next morning with no change at all. He would cry out in pain with even the smallest movement. A Saturday Doctor visit was in order (and we all know that is avoided at ALL COSTS...the only thing worse is having to go to InstaCare). I fully expected her to send us to a chiropractor, or physical therapist but was surprised she sent us to Primary Children's for a CT scan and blood work. It may have been over cautious of her, but I don't argue when doctors are saying the word "possible infection".

Primary's is fun....movies, video games, toys etc. but we were there a looong time. Darin and I were over it after the first hour and a half. The blood work was AWFUL. Darin had to hold him in a combination wrestling move/bear hug while they poked and poked. He has really small veins. Then when the blood came they spilled it on the floor. In my memory a cup of blood gushed to the floor, but I have an over active imagination and a tendency to exaggerate.

The nurses were so great though. They tried to make it up to Bub with a Chevron car, Hot Wheel car, Orange blanket, coloring book, crayons, lots of crackers, juice and then they gave Soren a Care Bear (circa 1980's....I think my sister may have had that one!!) complete with a VHS tape of the movie.

The CT scan was a breeze. Bub loved it, and he got to see his bones afterwards.
They sent us home saying it should get better.
His doctor prescribed Lortab, my mom prescribed essential oils, and after 3 days of both he is finally moving his head in what I think is full range of motion.

Don't bother coming to my house to steal the Lortab, what he doesn't use I am going to take for my next headache.

Hill Aerospace Museum

Kind of takes your breath away, everything is so immense!
{colossal, commodious, prodigious, I just looked in a thesaurus to find a better word than "big"}

These guys loved it.

This guy didn't.
Beyond nap time.

I hadn't been there since Freedom Academy when I was a high school Junior.
Which reminds me of the time they let us shoot some sort of M-16 type weapon. I got the best marks durring that exercise. It seemed like everyone wanted an explanation so I told them my Uncle took us shooting all the time, and had some sort of semi-automatic something that we shot an old toilet with. When it came time to drive the Hummer, the Officer said "Girl from Carbon County goes first, they know how to train em' down there!"

Too bad I am not known for my driving skills.

Busy Betsy

The 1st grade had their PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN program.
These little ones learned 12 (TWELVE) songs, and each had a speaking part.
I was holding back tears the whole time, but then they had the service men and women stand up and sang some song about laying safe in their beds at night because of them.....heart melting I tell ya!

The gym is not a good photo op location so here is our best picture of M finishing her part.
"No one can make you feel inferior without your permission"
-Eleanor Roosevelte

She also got to say another part because a little girl was gone that day. Apparently the teacher was going to say it but Miriam pipped up and said she had it memorized, and by golly, she did! {it wasn't a long line...something about being indivisible}

Piano Recital

She did great!
4 little songs completely memorized

M and her friend Ivy.
Mimi takes lessons from Ivy's cute Grandma {She has THE cutest South African accent}. In fact, the only reason we got in with her teacher is because we had an in with Ivy.

Pictures of the dance performance to come.....we have 3 Saturday's of performances left!
It's not all about Miriam, although sometimes it seems like it.
These boys are holding their own.

Bub is such a great help with Soren. He tackles him every time he gets a notion little S is even thinking about heading for the stairs. {gate will be up soon} So. Very. Helpful.

Bub has lately decided to be Cowboy when he grows up {he has even turned down a proposal of marriage to follow this dream}. Which makes me think he will probably grow up to be an Engineer since his dad felt the same way at his age.

I wish I could bottle up Bub at this age, and take him out whenever I want a laugh. I do want him to grow up to see who he becomes but he is soooooo entertaining right now. Although I would try to find someway to remove the whining from the bottle.

I am not going to lie 5 teeth in 4 months has given us plenty of demon baby moments.
Last night was a bit demonish.

But to day he was baaaack! My sweet smiley charmer.
I guess it's true that we need to go through the demon to truly appreciate the charmer.

Lovin It Up

Woke up to nutella strawberry crepes!
I can only buy that stuff once a year, otherwise veins might start pumping nutella. I can't stay away from it.

20 minuets before she had to leave Miriam reminded me about this hairstyle we had seen weeks ago when I said "we should try that for Valentines Day!". It was easy and cute but I need to watch what I say. Her memory is amazing.

We had drawn secret valentines earlier in the month. I had Bub so I let him paint on our sliding glass doors and left a "hot wheelie" which is Bub talk for a Hot Wheel car, on his pillow.
This was Bub's surprise in Miriam's lunch. His note said "I love Miriam because she reaches things I can't reach, she makes up fun games, and I love her"

The day included 2 valentine parties and lots of dinner prep with a 9 month old hanging on my legs.

Right before midnight, the night before, I asked Darin to fold our love notes to the kids into origami hearts. Because he supports me in all my crazy ideas, even if they keep us up past our bedtime, he figured it out.
We gave the kids their mailbox and notes during our "scary" dinner, which is what Bub thought of our candlelight.
Miriam read 'You Are Special" to us for FHE (bonus, it is on the AR reading list). Then the kids heart attacked a sweet neighbor.
Then we put those sugared up darlings to bed.

And this is the beauty of blogging. All my hard work has been recorded.

I do love my beautiful children. I think they are hilarious, unique, and wonderful. They were bound to be, just look at who their father is!

Happy Love Day!

Here are M's valentines this year. Little vinyl numbers sewn with ribbon. These were inspired by Stephanie's cute Mom. She made them at a Valentine Exchange I went to a few years back.

Bub's were store bought with animal tatoos! It was love at first sight.

We LOVE M's teacher so we upgraded her valentine. Much bigger, and peanut M&M's rather than conversation hearts (even if they are the sweet tart ones).

Busy Day ahead....

Nutella strawberry crepes for breakfast (oh mercy...this is a valentine treat for me)
Get my Valentines off to school and work with love notes hidden
Valentine Party play group for Bub
In charge of games at Mimi's class party
Valentine nap somewhere in between for Soren
Ballet for M
Valentine dinner with surprises (the dessert should be amazing if it turns out!)
FHE which I haven't fully planned yet...

Marcus's Baptism

Marcus was dashing in his new suit and grown up tie. He is such a cute fun loving guy.
It was fun to be together.

Hill-Billy cousins
I can't believe M will be 8 next year.

The cousins.
We are even steven at the moment 5 boys & 5 girls.

Budgets = LOVE

I don't know how these took me by surprise this year. Darin has brought me flowers for the last 7 years on Miriam's birthday. Plus, there was a note reminding him to buy them on our google calendar for weeks before he realized it. Never-the-less when we came home from dinner I gasped to see them on the table. The party, ballet, SEP's....it all occupied every last bit of my mind and I was just as surprised as Miriam's 1st birthday when he walked in the door with that first bouquet.

We are trying to be strict with our budget. We have some financial goals we are reaching for so we are really trying (I am REALLY trying, honey). Darin bought these flowers with his "blow fund" the little bit of unreported money we allocate for each other that we can do whatever we want with. Knowing these flowers weren't paid for with the "gift money" the "grocery money" the "recreation and leisure money", but came from Darin's very own stash of money makes my heart feel all warm and mushy.

Now that is love.
