How we do the BIG 4th

First there is a humongous breakfast feast.
Next, we dress our children like mini flags.
Then, we gather for the shortest parade with the most amount of goods thrown.

We let our kids play on train tracks while we wait.

We have patriotic conversations

...and then the real fun begins.

Some daring souls brave the park and come back with 3 feet of gummie snake, swords, and air brushed tattoos. (thanks for taking my kids grandpa and Sarah)

This year, one of us used his engineering degree to successfully relocate a hummingbird nest that was attached to the canoe. Some go canoeing, the nature friendly engineer goes kayaking.

We always have some sort of masterpiece for dinner, this year it was BBQ ribs courtesy of J&J.

We finish out the night with fireworks over the lake (well most of us do...someone had to stay with the babies).

We always celebrate Papa's birthday whether he wants to or not.
(cute fruit bouquet was a project Sarah had Miriam and Madison put together)

Papa and Grandma usually spend their birthday's being mauled by grand kids.

The kids always spend lots of time petting, feeding, and dreaming about other peoples horses.

There is usually a ride or two. Uncle Jared is the go sport utility guy.
(that is Marcus in the background, the little motorcycle ran out of gas)

We always make good memories with the cousins...

and every year I am more and more grateful for my country, for the family I come from, the family I married into, and my own little family.

Hey There Big Guy

(please excuse the booger eyes)

Weighing in at 13 lbs and 10 oz!
24 inches long!
Head Circumference 16 1/2 inches!

at 2 months, Soren is as big as an average 4 month old...95% all around.

He is really strong too. Can hold his head, hold his weight with his legs, and do baby push ups (pull ups too I bet..if he wanted to).
He has been our earliest smiler.
I have a hunch he is an early bloomer and his growth will be slowing waaay down here soon.
I could be wrong.
It's just a hunch.

Happy 4th Weekend!!

Maiden Voyage and Grand Aunt Ruth

Remember the Yak Darin was working on last fall??
Finished!
Isn't it a beauty?

Darin and my Father-in-law took their yaks out to Cutler Marsh for Darin's yak's maiden voyage.

It was a perfect evening for it.

The kids and I spent the day getting to know Darin's Aunt Ruth. I think the two words I would use to describe her would be Regal, and Disciplined. Such a sweet woman. Even though Soren cried a ton, Bub missed a nap and became super whiney, and there was general chaos whenever the kids came up from the basement, Ruth complimented almost everything we did! And, as Darin pointed out, we have parents and then GRANDparents so our kids should call her Grand Aunt Ruth...it suits her better.

Grandpa B's garden is already flourishing! We had a few yummy strawberries.

I know these flowers are old news in the blog crafter world, but I still think they are darling.
They are so fun to make...you get to play with FIRE!
(Julia, let me know what you think)

The Ren boy is smiling so much right now.
We can't get enough of his sighs and giggles.

What? You need a closer look at the cuteness?

You're welcome.

The Face of Determination

When Darin talked to my Dad about marrying me, my Dad said, or possibly warned, that I was "determined". I don't see it so much in myself, but I see it in Miriam.

She can't be pushed into being determined. If she is not interested, she can do some sloppy work. (We have had many talks about this while doing homework) When it's her idea though, Holy Cow there is no stopping her!

There were many tears, and ripped blistered hands, while she was learning to do monkey bars. She NEVER gave up, not even when her hands were a bloody mess. She now tries all and any monkey bars she can find. And there are still tears, until she conquers each one.

She was the same when it came to snapping, hula hooping, and tying balloons.

I guess the trick with Miriam will be making her think that everything I want her to do was her idea. Any hope that could happen?

Miriam is also taking a cooking class this summer. Her dream of becoming a chef is alive and well! She still pretends she is on the Food Network when we cook together. I don't think she would let me record her, which breaks my heart because it is HILARIOUS!!
Picture Miriam, serious as a heart attack saying something along the lines of:
"You really need to fluff those eggs...don't be afraid to really go crazy with that fork. It will add to the general fluffiness of the meal"

I love it!
I wish I wasn't so tired, I would cook with her more.

A different hard thing to do...

My first trip all alone with three kids.
I'm not going to lie to you, it was hard.
Lots to pack, lots to think about, lots of things to juggle.
Going home is still fun, it's just not the break it use to be.
BUT
The kids LOOOOVE going to play with cousins, and I hadn't seen my Grandpa for a LOOONG time.

I love that G'pa is wearing his BK hat. Thats where he shoots the breeze with his friends over pepsi cola. He's just about the cutest Grandpa anyone ever had!

We roasted hot dogs over the fire pit while the kids played,

and played,

and played!

We went to the cabin where it rained all weekend!
I haven't heard thunder and lighting like that since I was in Newport RI.

Aunt Julia took the girls to a princess party

Bub and Taters played in the mud!

Soren's Birth (WARNING: long and personal post)

Right after I had Soren my body began to shake uncontrollably. I was in shock I believe, although no one told me that, they just piled warm blankets on top of me. My mid-wife sat down next to my bed and said: "you probably don't know what to think about what just happened, it will take time to sink in, but what I want you to remember is that you can do incredibly hard things."

Miriam's birth was spiritual, Byron's birth was humorous, Soren's birth was empowering.

Both of my previous births had gone well, and fast. My mom had advised that during labor I stay home until the contractions "drop me to all fours and I howl at the moon". I took that advice, both previous times, I stayed home enduring the contractions only going to the hospital at that very last moment when you can get an epidural. Then my babies came fast and furious into the world Miriam about 5 pushes, Byron only 2, never in the delivery room more than 2 hours. I had good experiences with both births and really can't complain about having an epidural. Good, fast, painless births and easy recoveries. But I craved a different experience. I have always been in awe of the human body...the intricate systems that sustain life, create life, and heals wounds. I wanted the experience of having my body do what it has known how to do from the beginning of time. Also....I HATE needles, IV's, catheters, and monitors...all reasons for me to go naturally with this baby.

I didn't read any books, take any classes, or do much reading. My mid-wife said that my body would handle everything...all I needed was someone to guide me through the process and tell me how much longer to endure. I felt confident in her, and in my body. I also thought that as the time drew nearer I would do some research, but I never did. I was so preoccupied about the baby NOT coming that all my reading went into inducing labor, rather than enduring it.

After Soren failed his week overdue stress test, we were whisked away to labor and delivery. The baby had to come out today we were told. This was terribly disturbing to me, I wanted to do whatever was best for the baby, but it felt like all my options were closed and the hospital was in charge. It was obvious the hospital was thinking of hooking me up on pitocin. I didn't want to attempt going natural on pitocin since it makes contractions harder and stronger than usual. The admitting nurses didn't seem very happy when I said I needed to talk to my mid-wife and wanted a room with a tub. I was holding back tears until they left us alone in the room. I cried, and then Darin gave me a beautiful blessing in the bathroom (where no one would disturb us). Things changed after that, my strong wonderful mid-wife came and I felt like I had more say, and would be listened to. I was hooked back up to the monitor. Guess What? Everything was fine, the baby didn't need to come out that day after all. But since we were already checked into the room, the baby was obviously big enough to come, and my body had progressed since the last check, we decided that my mid-wife would break my water to start labor.

It worked immediately. I had felt a few contractions before, but then they started every 8 or so minutes harder and consistent. Darin and I walked the halls of the hospital counting contractions. In 2 hours I went from 3 centimeters to 6 centimeters. It was painful, of course, but nothing I hadn't experienced before, and it was fun to spend so much time with Darin laughing and talking. Luckily, my mom had followed a spiritual prompting to come watch the kids during my stress test, so she was here to stay with them when I was induced. HUGE RELIEF.

The next hour stopped being fun. I lost my sense of humor as I went from 6 centimeters to 10 in 60 minuets. My mid-wife had thought it would take double or triple that time so she was back at her clinic thinking she would get to me in plenty of time to help me through transition and beyond. The contractions piled on top of each other harder and stronger and more intense than anything I have ever felt before. I told the nurse to call my mid-wife, and please please for the love of everything, could I get in the tub!! Darin was there trying to make me breathe, which was the last thing I wanted to do. I wanted to clinch up into a ball and pass out. I remember saying "ouch ouch ouch ouch" over and over, shaking uncontrollably and shutting my eyes tight. Our nurse was pretty annoyed with me, she also seemed to think things would take longer to progress, and I am sure the thought of me "acting" like that for 2 more hours made her roll her eyes in disgust.

I earned her respect in the end. By the time my mid-wife arrived she said I had maybe 5 more contractions (which I didn't think I could do...I really didn't) and the tub was out of the question. Two contractions and two pushes later Darin leaned over and said quietly "it's a boy...it's a boy. You are amazing, your body was made to do this". Then Soren was on me, and I have hazy memories of nursing him while shaking and shivering, holding his little 9 lb body tight to mine.

The nurse was so much kinder after that! Enthusiastic even, like she had enjoyed herself. Darin thought the whole thing went much better than he had expected (he was thinking screaming and yelling). It turned out to be much harder than I anticipated. I had gone through much of labor in previous pregnancies, but nothing compares to that last hour before birth. It was the most intense, painful experience of my life. Truthfully, thinking of doing it again frightens me. I hope I would be brave enough, and strong enough to do such a hard thing again.

I hope I haven't offended anyone by posting this story. I have noticed that most women don't want to hear about natural births. Some say it's stupid to go through the pain, and some say it's unnecessarily dangerous. I guess to these people I would compare it to running a marathon. Running 26.5 miles is unnecessary, it can be dangerous, not everyone can or should do it. It takes endurance, focus, determination. It's incredibly painful, and pushes you past what you think you can handle. Why do people run marathons? From what I have heard, it's a lot of the same reasons people have natural births. You do it because the human body was made to do it. Because the sense of empowerment and accomplishment is worth the pain. Because there are benefits in endorphins, hormones, other positive physiological responses. Because knowing you can accomplish hard things increases your self-esteem.

I have loved all my birth experiences. Miriam's peaceful, spiritual birth is sacred to me, laughing through Bub's labor and delivery with Darin was delightful. This birth was hard, and scary, but it gave me a sense of accomplishment I haven't felt in years. I am proud of all of us, me Darin my mid-wife and Soren. We made an awesome team.

I can do hard things.

The End of the Beginning

There has been too much growing this year!

I love who they are....but I miss who they were.
(at least Bub's feet haven't grown too much)

and then there were three!
Definitely our biggest change of the year.

Miriam's wonderful teacher.
We've become very attached to this amazing woman over the year.
She has been teaching kindergarten for something like 20 years!! She's never wanted to teach anything else, she loves this age.
She is also the primary president of her ward AND she, along with her husband are in charge of the Youth Trek this summer...if you aren't amazed by this woman, well then YOU should be in charge of Trek.

Celebrating with creamies and playgrounds!

My boys
I got choked up the first time I said that phrase.
Because we didn't find out if we were having a boy or a girl, it took awhile to sink in that I have two sons. Now, I am so attached I can't imagine anything different. I have already started picking up matching polos for next summer.

Soren 3 Weeks
Nicknames so far.....
Ren
Renny Baby
Baby Sorenson (that one is from Marcus)
"Soarin' Flyin'" (a la High School Musical, that one is from Miriam and her friends)

Memorial Weekend

We started potty training Bub...fun fun fun! He is actually, doing very well, I am relieved. Lots of Jelly Belly's have been consumed.

We had a visit from Erik and Kelly which was so fun, we hardly ever get to see them. They oohed and aaahed over Soren, and then we had frozen yogurt.

Darin worked on organizing the garage, and his photography.

We played at 3 different parks where Miriam worked on her monkey bar and acrobatic skills
(we had a circus performance for FHE tonight).

We officially celebrated by decorating graves.
The boys are both named after ancestors at this cemetery so we took a few pictures, but Bub wanted nothing to do with it.
Next year we will have to venture out to Miriam's namesake, and then get down to where I am from for the boys other namesakes.
I love family history.

Miriam LOVES to hold Soren. Any chance she gets she will hold him, but he is so big her stamina doesn't last long! Bub doesn't ask to hold him, but he will rub is head and say "ohhh Zo-an...so coot". He also likes to give "gentle hugs" and then rub his head against Soren's hand.

They are such sweet kids
....but I'll be honest they are wearing me out!

Good-bye Kindergarten!

Looking forward to 1st grade!

Kindergarten Picnic

...Oh but wait, we still have a week of school left!
I can't believe we go back after Memorial Day!!

Random, but that's my life these days. . .

It's been three weeks.

(Soren 5 days..give or take)

That's it.
Just three weeks.

(Soren 3 weeks and 2 days)
Look what happened!
Seriously this kid is growing like a weed.
(cutest weed I've ever seen)

Miriam had a "dance demonstration" today. She is in a dance theater class, so her performances are a lot of free form pantomime-ish type stuff. Her teacher wanted to show the parents that she really is teaching technique along with the "free movement" stuff.
It was actually very reassuring to me, because I had wondered.

Bub entertained us by finding these sweet shades and doing some pantomime himself.
That DVD remote is not really a DVD remote...it's an "ibog" of course!
He turned me into a pickle with it yesterday morning.

For your enjoyment, a little of that "free movement" I was talking about.
(the crazy backdrop is from the theater's Steel Magnolias performance, not part of the dance demonstration).

Bub Turns 3!

I wish all birthday parties could be as nice as this one.
Beautiful weather.
Special guests who traveled 2 hours to spend the evening (thanks mom and dad! Uncle Mark was a special guest as well, but he only drove 20 min).
The birthday boy was delightful, excited, and sweet.
The cake was awesome (peanut butter chocolate ice cream!).
My dinner turned out well.
Perfection, I tell ya.

This boy melts my heart.
He is seriously the sweetest little guy, and hilariously funny if you can understand his "bubese".
He has started carrying around one of Miriam's old boy baby dolls since Soren was born. He is so gentle and sweet with both the doll and Soren.

Bub usually saves half of his food in the fridge for later. He just loves knowing there is half a sandwhich, half a piece of gum, or some juice waiting for him whenever he wants it.

Bub is very cautious. He evaluates situations before jumping into them.
He is however, all boy, he loves jumping off furniture, throwing things, kicking things, and getting dirty.
He likes bugs in theory but not in real life.

Bub is very passive, he avoids conflict when he can, and if he is fed and well rested he lets things go easily.
He is enthusiastic, easy to please, and easily entertained.

He loves his sister and trusts her completely (she bought him the gift above with her birthday money).
He gives the best hugs.

I love this boy!

Happy Birthday!

I love having babies in the Spring (and luckily we've been able to plan em' that way!).
One thing I didn't plan is having Darin's birthday so close to our son's birthdays. I actually believe this is a gift in and of itself, and will be so fun in the future.

This year though...and three years ago when Bub was born...not such exciting birthdays.
Darin doesn't seem to mind as much as I do, but honestly, neither of us have the energy to plan or do much of anything.

So, although he doesn't want to go out, doesn't want a big gift, doesn't want to make any fuss, I really want him to have a great birthday THIS YEAR because....

because.....he's always been my hero, but the week Soren came home...well, he has just rescued me this time around. There were moments I honestly didn't think I was going to be able to do it

because...I have been reminded how tender and loving he is as a father.

because.....he has been extra patient with the children, especially when my patience has run out.

because....he gave me such a thoughtful and wonderful mothers day gift

because....although he wasn't as excited as I was about having a baby naturally, he was there with me the whole time. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, and it was no cake walk for him either.

because....there is so much on both of our minds at this moment.

This birthday will be be low-key....but someday, when there are no babies, Darin's birthday is going to be amazing!

Mark my words.

Sunday, May 09, 2010

"I don't want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully, tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails. I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids to scout camp. I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick neighbors children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone's garden. I want to be there with children's sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived"
-Marjorie Pay Hinckley

My heart is overflowing this mother's day.
As grateful as I am to be a mother for the third time, it's not my motherhood that I am focused on. My mother has served me a million times over this week. It goes beyond watching the kids for 3 days, doing my laundry, making meals, and cleaning my house - all of which she did do.

She was here. She listened to me. She encouraged me. I just needed her more this time around, and it happened to be an awful time for her to be needed.
She came anyway.
I love you mom.

I have had a fantastic Mother's Day. Miriam made me breakfast on couch (which is where I end up in the morning) and then she asked for oatmeal, and Bub requested eggs...those cute demanding things. There was also a gift from Miriam...full of carnival trinkets, and sparkly things. So sweet. But really it's Darin who has made my Mother's Day so great. He has been the saving grace over this last week. Maybe someday I can write in detail the ways he has served and blessed me...it's all too current and fresh at the moment. Suffice it to say I married a wonderful man.
To top it all off, he gave me an amazing Mother's Day/early birthday gift (anyone else going to be at Spark?) Something to look forward to on my most overwhelmingly homebound days. Those days are worth it...but having an upcoming break is a breath of fresh air for me.

Lets have a look at the fella causing all the ruckus around here.

The ever growing and changing Soren.
(cute blanket made by Julia...Thank you!)

Here he is at one week.
Last Dr. visit he was almost 10 lbs. in the 95% all around (height weight head). He is a proportionately perfect big guy, but to me he seems so tiny!

We had one scary trip to instacare, but other than that smooth sailing with this fella. Our friends Jamie and Kevin came to watch the kids till 11:00pm that scary night. I can't say thank you enough. I don't want anything remotely similar to happen to them, but I do hope we can repay the service someday.

These two monkeys are kind of getting the run of things around here. 8:30 am on a Saturday and they are out playing to their hearts content only coming in to feed and poke the baby a bit. Actually, they are really good with Soren. A bit loud, but very gentle.

The babe is awake. Time to feed.
